Pat Jarvis’ Letter
When I began reaching out to former players who shared the field with Nolan Ryan, I never expected many to respond—certainly not those whose connection reached back nearly sixty years. So when Pat Jarvis, the very first major league batter ever struck out by Nolan Ryan, took the time to write me back, it was deeply humbling.
Mr. Jarvis admitted he doesn’t remember the moment—it was, after all, just another late-season game in 1966 for a young pitcher making his debut. But that honesty only adds to the beauty of the exchange. Nearly six decades later, he still extended kindness and generosity to a stranger chasing the details of baseball’s long memory.
I’m profoundly grateful for his reply and for the spirit of goodwill behind it. Even without a vivid recollection, his note reminds us that baseball’s history isn’t just about what people remember—it’s about the grace with which they choose to be remembered.
