The K Chronicles

Nolan Ryan’s career is defined by numbers.
But the moments behind those numbers tell a different story.
The K Chronicles is a collection of those stories—told through the players who stood in the box, the teammates who shared the field, and the people who witnessed those moments as they happened.

Pat Jarvis: The First to Fall
Before Nolan Ryan became a legend—before the no-hitters, the 5,000 strikeouts, and the awe-struck hitters—there was Pat Jarvis. On September 11, 1966, Jarvis, a young pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, stepped into the batter’s box at Shea Stadium and, unknowingly, into baseball history. He would become the answer to a trivia question, a footnote in a Hall of Fame career—but more than that, he was the first name in a record book unlike any other.
Jarvis himself was in the early stages of his big league journey. Nicknamed “The Little Bulldog” for his tenacity, he had earned a spot in Atlanta’s rotation after a strong showing in the minors. Though he would go on to carve out a respectable career—winning 85 games and pitching in two postseason series—his most enduring contribution to the game came not from the mound, but from one trip to the plate against a wiry 19-year-old Mets reliever making his Major League debut.
That reliever was Nolan Ryan.
About the Author
Dennis Marksbury rediscovered his love of baseball in an unexpected moment — sitting beside his daughter, carefully sleeving her Pokémon cards, and remembering the thrill of his own childhood collection. That small spark opened a door back to the past, to Nolan Ryan, and to the stories that once lived in cardboard and memory. What began as a quiet return to collecting grew into The K Chronicles — a deeply researched, story-driven exploration of the players, umpires, and fans who helped shape Ryan’s legend from the other side of the plate. Through letters, interviews, and a reverence for the game’s enduring soul, Dennis explores the human threads woven through baseball’s most untouchable arm.
