When I received a handwritten letter from Brad Arnsberg, it instantly became one of the most meaningful pieces in this entire project. Arnsberg’s role in Nolan Ryan’s 300th career win has always stood out to me—the young reliever trusted to close out one of baseball’s great milestones. His letter was warm, humble, and deeply respectful of the moment and the man who defined it.

While recounting that night, Brad made a small error in one of his pitching stats—an honest slip after more than three decades. Wanting to preserve the record accurately, I wrote back to confirm the correction and asked his permission to note it. His reply was quick and generous. Not only did he give his blessing, but he also shared something far more personal: that his mother had been praying he wouldn’t “mess it up” when his name was called that night.
