Brad Arnsberg for the Save
July 31, 1990 | Arlington Stadium | Texas Rangers vs Milwaukee Brewers
Nolan Ryan’s 300th Win

Few milestones define a pitcher’s career like the 300-win club — a rare summit of longevity and mastery. At age 43, Nolan Ryan climbed that peak against the Milwaukee Brewers, delivering seven strong innings for his 300th career victory.
But what sealed the moment wasn’t Ryan’s arm — it was Brad Arnsberg’s.
With regular closer Jeff Russell injured, Rangers manager Bobby Valentine turned to the 23-year-old right-hander to protect history. Arnsberg, pitching for the second straight day, came on in the eighth and recorded the final four outs with calm precision.
From Medford, Oregon, his mother knelt in prayer, and the baseball gods listened.
Ryan’s 300th win — secured by a steady young reliever — became a moment of shared immortality.
“I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity — not only to get the save in Nolan’s 300th, but also to have gotten to play a couple of years around the legend himself.”
— Brad Arnsberg
Brad Arnsberg was gracious enough to write to me about the save for Ryan’s 300. More of his account can be found in The K Chronicles!
